Sawan Vihar is a voluntary group run by and for Asian women to promote the health and well being of older female members of the Indian community in Leeds and the surrounding district who speak Punjabi, Hindi, Gujarati and Urdu. Originally set up by 5 people meeting in a home, it has grown and now meets every Monday afternoon in a local church on Stainbeck Road in Leeds.
We run cultural, educational, sporting and leisure related activities that benefit the community. We have various sessions including, Yoga, Tai Chi and IT classes. Women look forward to coming to the group; some of them are alone and feel isolated. They enjoy singing and reminicsing with each other. The group is growing and we have about 30-40 people attending some sessions and we provide refreshments for them also. We celebrate Indian festivals such as Diwali and also have outings as well such as going to Pizza Hut for a meal.
WYCAS has helped us a lot. We are a voluntary group with little experience of bookkeeping. Claire Welling from WYCAS is our accountant and has helped us to do our accounts and showed us how to keep records. Any time we need help on anything Claire is happy to give us the right advice. She is patient and always happy to listen and give us support and good advice. We are very lucky to have Claire to help us with our bookkeeping. If we didn’t have WYCAS to help us we would be in a real mess – thank you Claire for your help!
I have learned how to do the accounts and keep financial records. It has given me more confidence and helped me to do the job better. I don’t think I could have done this without the help of Claire and WYCAS.
